Current Features

• Practice Modes:
  • Free-Play/Wait Mode: The music pauses and waits for you to play the correct notes before advancing.
  • Real-time Scoring (Work in Progress): Test your skills at full speed with strict accuracy tracking and performance ranks.
• Looping: Master difficult phrases by dragging start and end points on the progress bar to loop any section of the score. You can also save any loop as a new, standalone song in your library for focused practice.
• Review Mode & Analytics: In-depth performance breakdowns with timing, accuracy and note-by-note feedback to help you see exactly where and how you can improve.
• Adjustable Tempo & Transposition: Take full control of any song. Slow down complex passages to your comfortable pace or transpose any piece into a different key to match your instrument or range.
• Independent Track & Hand Practice: Practice exactly what you need. Isolate the left hand, right hand, or any specific track while the other parts play automatically or stay silent.
• Note Name Overlays: Optional ABC/Note name labels directly on the staff to assist with reading complex ledger lines.
• Fingering Suggestions: Toggle between the original sheet fingerings or a statistical model that generates them for any piece.
• Virtual Piano: On-screen keyboard showing both the expected notes and your MIDI input in real time.
• File Support: MuseScore (.mscz), MusicXML, MIDI, and ABC files. Repeats get unwrapped automatically.
• MIDI Output: Drive external synths or VSTs directly from Playsheet.
• Cloud Sync: Library, progress, and settings sync across devices.
• Ranking System: Competitive skill progression inspired by Q-Up: the pinnacle of competitive gaming.
• Music Simplification: Experimental—automatically strip down hard passages to a playable level.

Things in Consideration

We are constantly refining the Playsheet experience. Currently, development is heavily community-driven. Here are some of the additional items currently in development or under consideration:

• Academic Research Integration: We envision Playsheet as a platform to bridge the gap between abstract music research and real piano learning. We are looking into integrating more interesting research.
• More Conversion Formats: Experimental PDF OMR and recording-to-sheet workflows are being tested, but they are not reliable enough for the main import path yet.
• Improvements to Music Simplification: Its more miss than hit right now. But requires a more powerful backend = more server costs :(
• Polished Real-Time Mode: While currently an experimental feature, we plan to continually refine our real-time tracking to ensure the continuous scrolling mode feels as polished as Wait Mode.
• Microphone Input: An algorithm that is robust, and responsive is non trivial.
• Improved Review Feedback: Ideas for more intuitive visualizations and actionable insights for post-performance review data.
• Metronome: Currently challenging to integrate seamlessly with the dynamic pausing nature of Wait Mode.
• Dynamics Scoring: Leveraging MIDI velocity to provide feedback on your expressive performance. This is challenging as dynamics are rarely well-annotated in digital sheet music, and not all MIDI keyboards support dynamics.
• Note Duration Tracking: Advanced scoring based on precise note hold duration. This is complex to evaluate fairly, and sheet music rarely encodes full picture (see this discussion for context). Many MIDIs are not humanly playable
• Sustain Pedal Integration: Figure out how to integrate a sustain pedal into the scoring.
• Sight-Reading Challenges: Procedurally generated exercises designed specifically to sharpen your raw reading speed.
• Practice Dashboard: Better long-term progress tracking, practice heatmaps of your repertoire mastery and personalized learning milestones.
