Where to Find Free Sheet Music Online

It's worth paying for quality music, but not everyone can afford to. Here are the best free options we've found.

Here's a ranked comparison of the best sheet music sources available online. Playsheet works best with MusicXML → ABC notation → MIDI.

PDFs and other formats are not supported (yet!). But online converters exist like Audiveris or Audiforge.

The Classics

1. IMSLP — The Classical Archive

imslp.org is the definitive source for public-domain classical music. Over 700k scores — Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Mozart and beyond.

• Best for: Anything published before ~1930 (public domain).
• Tip: Filter by "MusicXML" in the file listings when available. Most entries are PDF scans, but the XML versions work far better for playsheet.

2. OpenScore — Professionally Digitized Classics

OpenScore takes public domain classics and professionally digitizes them — no OCR artifacts, clean formatting, open source. Quality over quantity.

3. JC's ABC Tune Finder

JC's ABC Tune Finder is an incredibly fast, old-school search engine that indexes ABC notation files across the web. If you are looking for traditional Irish, Scottish, or American folk tunes, this is the holy grail. All ABC files can be imported directly into Playsheet.

4. Free-scores.com

Free-scores.com has a broad catalog of public-domain, educational, and community-uploaded arrangements. It is strongest when you need printable PDFs or quick MIDI reference files rather than polished MusicXML.

5. Sheet Music Consortium

The Sheet Music Consortium provides tools and services that promote access to and use of online sheet music collections by scholars, students, and the general public.

For Pop music

1. MuseScore — The Everything Store

musescore.com is the largest community-driven sheet music library. People upload arrangements for pretty much everything — pop hits, anime themes, film scores and soundtracks.

• Tip: Always download the MusicXML export. It imports cleanly into Playsheet with tempo, key signatures and dynamics intact.
• Note: Some downloads require a Pro account, but there's a massive free catalog if you browse around. (* hence "Sub. Required" for many premium sheets).

2. VGMusic

VGMusic.com is a long-running archive with MIDI files. These are often simplified arrangements that work well as piano exercises.

3. OnlineSequencer

OnlineSequencer is a web-based sequencer community with tons of user-created MIDI sequences available for download.

4. NinSheetMusic

NinSheetMusic provides well-arranged piano transcriptions.

5. BitMidi

BitMidi is a massive, clean archive of over 113,000 MIDI files. It features an extremely fast UI and is a great source for pop songs, classics and general MIDI dumps.

6. SheetMusicGo

SheetMusicGo is useful when you want to browse and preview arrangements in the browser before downloading. Most of its library is geared toward playable web views and PDFs rather than import-ready MusicXML.

Converting from different formats

Found a MIDI that sounds right but looks messy, or a PDF you want to practice interactively? Download MuseScore Studio (free, open source). You can open MIDIs to clean them up and export as proper MusicXML. PDF OCR is experimental and should be treated as a last resort.
